Gary Lee Meinung

Gary Lee Meinung passed away unexpectedly on October 9, 2023, at age 74, in Las Vegas, NV. Gary was born on June 19, 1949, in San Diego, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Avis Meinung. Gary leaves behind his five children, Justin Meinung, Arthur Meinung, Melody Meinung, Dylan Reed, and Michael Olivier. Gary was blessed to have five grandsons. Nathan Meinung, Daniel Meinung, Julian Olivier, Dylan Reed, and Logan Olivier. A loving sister, Alice Vigil, and a beloved brother, Arthur Meinung. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many wonderful friends. Gary embraced his blended family and the women who blessed him with children, devoted mothers Nita Davis and Sue Grantham. Gary spent his young years in Mission Beach, CA. Gary was a graduate of Mission Bay High School. He was an avid surfer and loved the beach life. Gary enjoyed fishing, listening to music, and spending time with friends. He possessed the quality of true friendship. His love for sci-fi and horror movies was endless. His favorite movies included Aliens, The Thing, King Kong, and Dracula, which he watched numerous times during his lifetime. He loved classic rock and country music. He enjoyed the Rolling Stones, Steve Miller Band, The Grateful Death, Hank Williams Jr, and Don Williams. Gary was known for taking pictures and always had a camera in his hand or top pocket. He would chuckle as he was snapping a photo while you were eating. His sense of humor was priceless. What brought Gary the most joy in life was his children. He gave the best of what he had to each of them. Gary was the first to admit he had challenges and struggles in life. In 1988, Gary began his journey to recovery. Gary dedicated his life to helping others on their journey. He spent countless hours with newcomers, taking them to meetings and sponsoring. Many have expressed the impact Gary had on their lives and path to recovery. He was employed at numerous inpatient treatment centers and spent many hours at Detox, Volunteers of America. His passion and joy of volunteering meant the world to him. Gary loved unconditionally, expecting nothing in return. A celebration of Gary's life will be in San Diego, CA. We invite all who knew and loved Gary to join us. Share your stories about your time with him and laughter, just as he would have wanted.
