Alice Sykes

Alice Sykes was born on December 31, 1912 to the union of Claudia and James Murray in Savannah, Georgia. She departed this life on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. She had one brother, Uncle Buster, and one sister Ruth Collins. Alice was united in holy matrimony to Author Sykes, Sr in Norfolk, Virginia in 1932. To this union, four children were born. Author Sykes Jr., Shirley Sykes, David Sykes, and Barbara Sykes. After his death, Alice united with Louis Brown. To this union one son, Romero Brown was born. She was a loving wife, proud mother, dedicated grandmother, caring daughter, loyal sister, supportive aunt and devoted friend. At an early age, Alice accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She received her education while in Savannah, Georgia. As a young lady, Alice moved to New York City. She was a gifted seamstress by trade. She always wanted her own business. She opened a sewing shop on 140th Street and 7th Avenue in 1948 in New York City. Alice serviced many happy customers. She turned the sewing shop into a small clothing factory with 8 sewing machines. Alice did so well, she opened a loft on 125th street in 1950 with 14 machines. She hired people who didn't know how to sew and taught them her craft. Alice ended up having to close the factory. She had a difficult time maintaining it due to the racial tensions during that time. Alice then opened another sewing shop and made clothing for various clients. She retired from sewing around age 65 but continued to sew from home. Alice moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1990 to be with family that already relocated to Las Vegas. She lived by herself until the age of 90. Alice lived with her son and daughter-in-law for many years until she required additional care. Alice was always an avid consumer of healthy foods, natural teas and healthy living. Until her death, she did not take any medications. She spent her last few years as a permanent resident at Silver Hills Health Care Center in Las Vegas, NV. She leaves behind three children Author Sykes, (Jannae) Shirley Sykes, Romero Brown (Pamela). Margaret Boyd was considered her adopted daughter. She cherished her nephew Robert Brooks. Two children, one grandchild and two nephews preceded her in death: David Sykes, Barbara Brown, Derrick Toomer, Earl Collins and Murray Collins. Grandchildren: Mark Sykes, Author Sykes III, Sheryl Thorpe, Delia Fisher (Timothy), Eddie Sykes, David Sykes, Jr. (Cynthia), Tekisha Toomer, Dr. Satara Brown, Yolanda Brown, Romero Brown, Jr. Great grandchildren: Del'on Fisher, DaMari Fisher, T'Maria Fisher, Julian Sykes. Great-great grandchildren: Kane Toomer, Jaida Nash.
